why “seven rivers”
The name Seven Rivers honors the Punjab region's ancient history, once known as the Land of the Seven Rivers (Sapta Sindhu) in the Rig Veda which is the earliest sacred book of India. These seven rivers—Satluj, Jhelum, Ravi, Beas, Chenab, Saraswati, and the Indus—symbolized abundance and cultural vitality. Following geopolitical changes and the Partition of India, the region became defined by its five rivers, giving rise to the modern name Punjab.
This shift from Seven Rivers to Five Rivers reflects not only historical transformation but also the resilience of Punjab's people. It embodies strength, healing, and reclaiming identity amid oppression and colonial legacies. By choosing this name, our practice upholds anti-oppressive values and honours those who resist injustice, emphasizing the role of heritage in healing.
